Missouri Teacher of the Year Darrion Cockrell "Mr. DC"

Missouri Teacher of the Year Darrion Cockrell "Mr. DC"

My guest for Episode 6 is Darrion Cockrell "Mr. DC," the Missouri Teacher of the Year from Crestwood Elementary School in the Lindbergh School District. If you're not inspired by listening to Darrion Cockrell's story, you may want to check your pulse. What DC had to overcome and endure at a young age is nothing short of incredible.

In this episode you'll find out what it's like to:

  • be one of six kids raised by a young, single mother who has a serious drug addiction
  • grow up in a neighborhood surrounded by gang violence, drug abuse and police brutality
  • be a sixth grader carrying a knife and wondering if you're going to have to kill another person to defend yourself
  • have an adult finally believe in you and look out for your best interests when you've grown up without a stable adult in your life
  • be taken in and loved by another family who helped provide some stability and direction in your life
  • live through your 16-year old brother being shot and killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time
  • wonder why God would choose you to receive the blessings of having the right people in your life so that you can turn things around
  • come from a life destined to end up in prison or the morgue and instead become the Missouri Teacher of the Year

You'll learn so much more from Darrion Cockrell's interview on Episode 6 of the Show Me South County Podcast. DC has an infectious smile and personality. The love he has for his students and his career comes shining through, especially when he talks about the CrestFit program that he put together to help support healthy lifestyle choices for students, faculty and parents at Crestwood Elementary.

Don't just listen to this episode, share it on Facebook or Instagram to help your friends hear the inspirational story of Darrion Cockrell.

What's The Best School District In St. Louis?
By winning the Missouri Teacher of the Year DC definitely put Lindbergh near, or at the top of the list for best schools in St. Louis. The Lindbergh School District has always had a great reputation for being one of the top school districts in St. Louis County. DC just put Crestwood Elementary on a lot of people's radars.

It's no secret that people often move into an area because of the school district. Because of Mr. DC, I wouldn't be surprised if more people were buying houses within the Crestwood Elementary district. I mean, who wouldn't want your child influenced and encouraged by Darrion Cockrell?

Heck, he's got me so fired up, I'm ready to go back to elementary school right now.
